Why be someone else when I can be me!

My portraits are more about me than they are about the people I photograph.

Photography is a new found passion for me from which I’ve found JOY, FREEDOM and PEACE!

Although I’ve always been intrigued, interested and fascinated with photography, my journey started only a short while ago.  Four and half years ago, to be precise…

You see, in 2007, I had decided to make some changes and start living my life to the fullest.  I had no clue at the time what those changes would be or when they would happen or how they would come.  I just knew that life was too short to waste any more time.

There you go, that was my plan…  No plan at all really.  So what I did was nothing.  I put it in the hands of faith and threw it out to the universe without giving it a second thought.

Well I guess that worked because less than a year later, during a casual dinner with friends, I met Kharim.  That’s when this exhilarating journey began for me.  There it was, my opportunity, staring me in the face like a knock knock joke.  Well, I didn’t waste any time saying “Who’s there?” and looked it straight in the eye and said “Hi, I’m Sonya!  Where do we start?”  It was that opportunity for me to pursue something that excited me and that I had long ago wanted to do but had forgotten.  “This is it!!  This is the time!!”,  I said to myself.

It wasn’t long before I was signed up for everything that N-Dimensions had to offer and that I was fully immersed in my new passion.  I couldn’t get enough!  I wanted to learn more and discover more and I was fascinated with what I was capturing with my camera.  I started seeing and looking at the world around me in a whole different way.  I saw beauty in things that I thought were ugly, life in things that I thought were dead and I developed a deeper appreciation for myself and for what surrounded me.  It changed me!!!

My greatest honour came just over a year after I started my first workshop with N-Dimensions.  Kharim offered me an apprenticeship as an instructor in her workshops.  After taking a few minutes to process what she had just said, I pulled a Tom Cruise and jumped on the sofa with my arms in the air and a grin on my face.  When I regained some sense of composure, I graciously accepted!

It’s been an adventure ever since.  A continuous growth process as I go along the path of self-discovery.

What fun to know that I will be clicking away for the rest of my days because there’s always something to discover, explore, experience, perceive and share.

I look forward to the rest of my life…
